Fully DeMerited
Fully DeMerited
Rare does a publication as esteemed as the New York Times afford a profile to a player from our modest Coca Cola Championship, but today’s issue contains a smashing write up profiling Watford defender Jay DeMerit. There’s nothing to quibble with in a very well researched article including accounts of his time at Southall and Northwood and soundbites from the man himself, whose obvious friendly demeanour reflects his polished and professional displays on the pitch. DeMerit’s performance in the US’s alarming 2-0 defeat of Spain at the Confederations Cup is the launch pad for this scrutiny. Whatever next? David Norris in the Boston Globe? Sean Derry in the Frankfurter Allgemeine?

June 29, 2009Frantic rearguard actions often make defenders look good, but a doughty performance alongside the similarly unheralded Oguchi Onyewu (whose former club Middlesborough have just arrived in the Championship) and Jonathan Spector (whose former club Charlton have just left it) can only mean more column inches for DeMerit.

July 2, 2009Hang on just a minute, let our good selves (Newcastle) and the Smogs not be confused. It was us who Onyewu turned out for, not particularly spectacularly, a few seasons back. Mind you, 'not particularly spectacularly' would have been an improvement on Coloccini.

July 28, 2009Good god…you're right. Am I suffering from premature memory lapses, or good old Championship Manager/Reality confusion. Still, he remains suitable for the 'have just arrived in the championship' part.
