TTU Awards 2009/2010: Worst Pitch

Like our Worst Kit award, this category could have only been conceived with one particular culprit in mind. A combination of hosting arena concerts over three successive summers (Elton John, George Michael, Meatloaf, Westlife and Rod Stewart if you’re interested) and an intemperate couple of winters meant that Plymouth Argyle’s Home Park pitch was practically ruined before the campaign even began, and it soon became a second tier talking point; particularly so after Barnsley were denied three deserved points after their rampant first half performance in October.

Optimistic Argyle fans speculated that their mudbath would lead to some form of advantage over fancy dan visitors, but in actual fact it coincided with a terrible year as the Pilgrims ended up with the worst home record in the division which led in no small way to their demise after six straight Championship seasons.

The decision to make a quick off-season buck over the past few years has therefore backfired massively. Now managerless and a division down, the Greens will do well to stabilise in League One next term. A new £500,000 bells and whistles replacement pitch is on its way; the Green Army will hope that it acts as a catalyst to happier times.

“Elton John, George Michael, Meatloaf, Westlife and Rod Stewart” – not sure which is worse – this shower or the egg chasers at Stockport and Reading? An honourable mention to Blackpool in this category who did seem to take advantage of the pitch.
