Of this season’s horrors, Bradford City’s redistribution of their traditional stripes into one vertical band of maroon on an amber background just didn’t seem right, although at least its design was relatively clean and organised – too many others were marred by cumbersome sponsors’ logos or template designs to mention.

Elsewhere, it might be assumed that Coventry City fans had far worse things to worry about than the state of their team’s kit, but the club deserve recognition for the characteristically shambolic nature of the release of the 2013-14 home shirt. Stock was not ordered in time for the start of the season due to the club’s pre-season administration, and so the previous season’s colours were worn until September with the sponsor taped over. When the new shirt arrived, it was an unsightly striped Puma template effort, and replicas were not available for fans to purchase until October. Much like the Sixfields move, everything about it felt cobbled together and amateurish.

For sheer gall, however, Bolton Wanderers scoop this year’s dubious accolade – when the colour of a kit can make you reach for the remote questioning if the contrast settings on your TV are bust, it’s never a good sign. A ghastly orange number that’s as awful as it is blinding and which seemed to be as actively to blame as the players for the 7-1 hiding the team experienced at the Madejski Stadium in January. Surely such a virulent shade of orange shouldn’t have passed health and safety rules? – and to top it off, the sponsor’s logo kept peeling off the initial batch delivered by the manufacturers.

We’d like to have included a photo but couldn’t find a picture of a fan daring enough to wear it – so here is a link.

I genuinely have gotten several headaches from looking at that Bolton kit, horrible.
