The Damned Forest: The ‘Real Story’ of Alex McLeish at Nottingham Forest

Ahead of its serialisation in a national newspaper, we’re fortunate enough to be able to give you a sneak peek into the diary of Alex McLeish, who’s had an eventful few weeks… * * * * * 23rd December 2012 Watched Villa get tonked 8-0 by Chelsea this afternoon. Not so long ago that would have cheered me up no end, but just lately I’ve been having difficulty feeling the usual sense of joy. Perhaps it’s just becoming all too predictable. Perhaps it’s time I got back into work. I’ll shove Lambert’s “dole scum” texts back down his throat. 24th…

Are You Experienced? Old Pros in the Championship

The January transfer deadline is less than a week away now and message boards everywhere are heralding a cry for more experience to be added to Championship squads. The judicious addition of a central defender with a Premier League background or a proven striker could be enough to convert pretenders into serious challengers. An extra injection of class could elevate a team above the hoi polloi scrambling to avoid the drop into League One. It’s held that the examples of Charlie Austin and Dwight Gayle are untypical. TTU’s Goodreads: 21-12-12

It’s been a fine week again for online writing and any of many could have made our three to pick out, but we have decided to drop back into the past in order to highlight two of the sites that inspired us in the early days of this blog in 2009 - others worth mentioning would be Two Hundred Percent, The Real FA Cup, Pitch Invasion, Viva Rovers, Llandudno Jet Set, Black & White & Read All Over and Mirko Bolesan (now renamed Spirit of Mirko). 2012-13 Scottish Premier League: location-map with 2011-12 attendance data and 2012-13 home jersey badges, Bill’s Sports Maps Not…

One of the best things about following football is that it gives you the chance to butt in on disputes that are none of your business. So when Sunderland fans sang: ‘Where were you when you were skint?’ to their Manchester City visitors last season, I didn’t hesitate to tweet. I simply asked why City fans didn’t respond: ‘Where were you when Bruce was here?’ Not out of any sympathy for the future champions,…

TTU Awards 2011-12: Player of the Season

Of all the categories in this year’s awards, the most clear cut winner was Rickie Lambert. The barrel chested scouser swept all before him in 2011-12 and how heartening it was to see this 30 year old veteran of Edgeley Park and Spotland so dominate the division. The parallels with Grant Holt have oft been drawn and no wonder – Lambert has every chance of matching the Norwich man’s achievements. 31 goals and four hat tricks have underlined his abilities and he has the knack of rousing the most disillusioned fans from their torpor – Lambert is not so much…
