TTU Go Predicting: Best Loanee

Alright. Whose idea was it to kick off our thematic predictions with a loan category…? Do people realise that it’s still July? In defence, although the days are but early, loans have become such a key aspect in every club’s year-on-year recruitment that transactions are happening much earlier than they might have previously. Of course, a great number of deals are yet to see light of day but – as our contributors for these posts Rob Langham, Chris Walker, Gav Barber, Ian Rands, Tom Furnival-Adams, Lloyd Langman, Chris Lines, Gary Andrews and Ben Woolhead make clear – plenty of moves…

TTU Go Predicting: A Club-By-Club Championship Preview

The hubbub engulfing our League 1 and League 2 previews this week has highlighted the sensitivity of the average football fan. Now it’s time for the Championship, a division in which, contrary to appearances, not quite all the teams start with B. Barnsley The high farce of the Tykes’ last minute escape against Huddersfield confirmed David Flitcroft’s emergence as one of the Football League’s most promising managers in April but there will be a nervousness about the season to come – a horrific 6-0 home defeat against Charlton sat amid a bevy of notable results in the run in and…

TTU Awards 2012-13: Team of the Season

This site has a natural penchant for the underdog, so Yeovil were an obvious candidate for this year’s Team of the Season, which of course represents the climax of our annual TTU Awards. Paddy Madden’s goals were crucial to their success but the Glovers – a well-organized collective – were more than a star striker and supporting cast. Our tails are a-wagging ahead of their Championship debut on August 3. Crystal Palace also displayed similar qualities in securing their own play-off win. A well-balanced side in all areas, they proved that a commitment to youth development and sound judgement in…

TTU Awards 2012-13: Manager of the Season

Of all the categories this year, our opinion formers were most divided on this. Sure, the collection of silverware is all important but it’s as much about the raw materials and how far they are stretched. Hence, a number of bosses deserve credit for exceeding expectations - those gentlemen who chose to forget this when assessing Nigel Adkins and last year’s winner Brian McDermott would do well to take note. Tiers 2-4 have provided a no more encouraging environment for those playing the long game but with Barnsley written off before the start of every season as relegation fodder, and this…

TTU Awards 2012-13: Young Player of the Season

When we announced the winner of the loan signing of the season on Tuesday, friend of the blog and author of The Long Way, A. E. Greb mischievously commented that Wilfried Zaha could perhaps have been in contention. As I remarked at the time, the Ivorian born youngster would have been a worthy winner of a number of our awards but as it turned out, he was always going to be a shoo-in for the Young Player accolade. You’ll hear plenty of sour grapes from opposition supporters about Zaha, but, the truth is, he is that damn good. Pretty much every defence…
