What’s in a Name?

This is a guest post from Ben Woolhead, co-founder of the esteemed Newcastle United Blog, Black and White and Read All Over. Ben turns his attention to the ongoing furore surrounding the naming rights to St. James’ Park.Earlier this month it was announced that Newcastle owner Mike Ashley had taken it upon himself to rebrand St James’ Park with an unwieldy new name, crowbarring in a reference to his sports firm for the duration of the season to demonstrate the value of naming rights. Cue a storm of outrage from fans, myself included, and a chorus of guffaws from everyone…

Surprise, Surprise

A few weeks ago, one poster on these pages said that the only surprise of the season so far was that there hadn’t been any, but the last three games have turned that over to an extent. The three relegated teams still head the table, but a collective sticky patch has opened things up a little. Fantasy Football

As if we couldn’t get excited about a new season in the Football League, the Beeb have dutifully reminded us what’s at stake by way of a new trailer, which is currently being aired across its channels. Having already announced their planned coverage, which is (in fairness) an improvement on ITV’s blink-and-you-miss-it The Championship, the Beeb seem to have engaged in a battle to win football fans’ affection by selling the League(s) as an endearing sideshow, complete with a set of cuddly comedy characters and, what’s more, through assigning perennial backroom boy Manish Bhasin as its frontman. There is just…
