This year’s League Two relegation battle is quite remarkable. Not just for the closeness of the fight, but for the teams involved. All bar one have recently spent time in the Conference and all bar one have gained promotion to the League since two-up two-down was introduced from non-league’s top tier. Does this mean the gap between the two divisions is decreasing? Or getting further apart? Relegation battles in League Two have followed a similar pattern in previous seasons. There would inevitably be one financial basket case of a club, plus a few of the smaller league teams and others who’d…

Unexpected Rivalries 2: Shrewsbury, Port Vale and Wrexham
After Kerry Andrew opened our Unexpected Rivalries series back in March, we are delighted to welcome back Andrew Harding, deviser of an eponymous blog and a man we have invited to muse on those clubs likely to get the goat of the average Shrew. True, Hereford remain the most indelible foe, but in the spirit of the series, Andrew, who can be followed on Twitter here, spreads the net wider, clearly spoiling for disagreement. Opposition goading is part of the whole spectacle of football. They might well have won more trophies and have a much greater fanbase than you but as far as…

This year’s award for Best Ground just has to go to Brighton’s AMEX. The wait may have been long and tortuous for the Seagulls but their new stadium is a strong addition to the 72’s roster. It does have its criticisms: architecturally, it perhaps shares a little too much in common with the Starship Enterprise and the train ride back into town has been fraught with stress on some occasions, but overall the AMEX has delighted far more supporters than not with its clever use of space under the stands; local beers and pies; green credentials; padded seats and friendlier-than-average…
TTU Awards 2011-12: Best Away Trip
There are compensations that come with a tumble down the divisions. While Championship fans must largely contend with a sequence of out of town meccano sheds, visits to Frankie and Benny’s and repeated attempts to negotiate those ubiquitous metal railings that align our national dual carriageways, League 2 in particular can throw up some pleasingly traditional sensations. It’s sad then to recount that Football League fans will be deprived of the chance to re-enact our 2011-12 Best Away Trip next season for a TTU jaunt to Hereford United wins the accolade. Edgar Street is marvellously quirky and old-fashioned of course but its…
