TTU Go Predicting: Best Free Agent

A look at the Professional Footballers’ Association list of out of contract and available players becomes more depressing by the year, even if there are Premier League outcasts aplenty whose current availability is often more a consequence of protracted contract negotiations and a choice of suitors. Hence, Chris Baird, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Carlton Cole and the like will end up somewhere eventually. Of those, the pick of the list is perhaps Hitzlsperger and whilst ‘The Hammer’ may well find interest from a top tier team in Europe, his recent injury record and failure to last more than a year at any…

TTU Go Predicting: a Club-by-Club League 1 Preview

Following yesterday’s start to pre-season, in which we looked at all 24 League 2 clubs, our intensive schedule continues as we move on to League 1. Tomorrow, attention will turn to the Championship. Bradford City Fairytale Bradford City have added a little sheen to their well built squad as they look to attack League 1 at a canter – Rochdale’s Jason Kennedy and experienced winger Mark Yeates join the standout performers James Hanson, Carl McHugh and the quicksilver Nahki Wells in Phil Parkinson’s promotion winning squad. Much will be expected of Wells’ second shot at this level after a failed…

Swindon Town, Sheffield United and Financial Fair Play

Perhaps the most significant occurrence of these early weeks of the 2012-13 season has been the transfer embargo imposed upon Swindon Town after the Robins became the first to fall foul of the new League 1 directives that a club’s fees and wages should not exceed 65% of its turnover. You’ll recall that a transfer tribunal’s insistence that a combined £340,000 be coughed up for James Collins and Troy Archibald-Henville has tipped Swindon above the limit, much to the chagrin of their manager whose name escapes me for the moment. On first glance, the judgement seems harsh. After all, promising…

Evans above contrition, but not the law

“It won’t change the passion and the drive and commitment that I have”. Rotherham manager Steve Evans there, speaking of the result of his latest brush with the FA, the small matter of a six-match stadium ban and £3000 fine (not a six-month ban, as the Independent seem to be reporting - nothing like a good sub-editor, is there?). The loveable rogue was found guilty of using “abusive and insulting words and behaviour towards a participant in or around the dressing room area at the end of the fixture which did include a reference to gender” following an ill-tempered meeting…

TTU Awards 2011-12: Bargain Buy of the Season

The list of nominees was long for the second in our eponymous yearly awards. Joe Mason, a regular starter and scorer for Cardiff; Kevin Nolan, hardly cheap, but still value for money; Rhoys Wiggins, who’s developed into by far and away the best left-back in League 1 over the course of the season after Charlton had snaffled him for a modest fee; and Crawley’s quick and dirty turnover of Tyrone Barnett were all heralded as good pieces of business up and down the leagues. Elsewhere, the electric Ricardo Vaz Te would be described as a corking 2011-12 purchase by Tykes…
