A Big Day for Macc

With fellow relegation candidates Plymouth seemingly coughing and spluttering towards the finishing line, today represents an excellent chance for either Macclesfield or Dagenham to push on and leave their rivals in mental tatters as the two meet at Victoria Road. Here, Macc fan and Magic Sponger Rob MacDonald wonders how it’s come to this for the Silkmen and what the implications for relegation would be in Cheshire East. Since Macclesfield Town were sitting (relatively) pretty in 14th place in League 2 on New Year’s Eve, I’ve joked with ever-lessening joviality about the fact that we appear to have been stuck…

Fathers and Sons at West Ham

Our latest guest post sees us welcome Tom Victor. Tom is the Major League Soccer Correspondent for Footy Matters and you can read a selection of his missives here. He’s also a proud Hammer and here brings his attention to the extraordinary development of family tradition at that storied east London club. You can follow Tom on twitter here. Plenty of things have happened over the last few months which have made me feel old. My little sister started her first term at university, patriotic manchild Jack Wilshere spawned a future World War III infantry soldier, and the newborn baby commemorated…

Capital: London Football, Present and Future

In an article last year, The Economist coined the phrase `Londonism’ to refer to what it regarded as a distinct ideology driven by the office of Mayor. It cited as the central tenets of `Londonism’: enthusiasm for the financial services industry; an openness to immigration; and the unceasing pursuit of economic growth. The success of this new way of thinking, according to the piece, is symbolized by the redevelopment of the Docklands to the east of the city’s centre. The landscape of this part of the city is now replete with tall, shimmering citadels of global financial behemoths, futuristically-designed transport hubs and high-value property developments. Unsurprisingly, however, the article fails to look beyond the streets…

TTU Awards 2010/2011: Young Player of the Season

For the simple reason that we think the Seagulls would have been less likely to stroll to promotion like they did without him, Elliott Bennett takes this year’s Young Player award. Of course, the man of the protruding tongue has since caved in to Paul Lambert’s advances but given the Canaries’ rising star, who can really blame the lad? Deemed ready for Championship football in this recent assessment of Brighton’s League 1 winning squad, a trusted source down in East Sussex likens Bennett’s style to that of Ashley Young and it’ll be interesting to see how he fares against those clubs of bigger pockets. Last year’s winner of this gong, Gylfi Sigurðsson,…

TTU Awards 2010/2011: Worst Pitch

There’s a whole other article that could be be written on the dynamic between Stockport County and Sale Sharks, but for the purposes of this award we’ll focus on the pitch at Edgeley Park. Plenty of football clubs share grounds with those amateur gents of the oval ball, Reading and Wycombe to name but two, and at points those playing surfaces may suffer from the sheer amount of game time demanded of them. But up in Greater Manchester, where the Hatters are mere tenants to the holding company which owns Sale Sharks, Cheshire Sports, it’s a different story. For several years now, Stockport supporters have had to spend hard earned money to watch…
