Max Gradel would have been an obvious choice for today’s Profile, but given that we’ve already pretty much covered the West African wide man, I thought that a consideration of Jordon Mutch, who caught my eye in Watford’s televised win at Loftus Road 10 days ago, was more appropriate.Currently on a six-month loan at Vicarage Road, the leftpegger looked a bit tasty in the centre of a sterling Golden Boys midfield. Despite a widely reported slow start which saw Mutch struggle to gain an understanding with his new teammates, he now appears to be striding forwards with meaning; deft, confident…

The Monday Profile: Mark Wright
Even if Dion Dublin had gone on to achieve diddly squat in his career, Cambridge United fans would forever cherish his memory for a youthful one man show against local rivals Peterborough in 1990. Similarly, Mark Wright, though only a loan star, will have secured himself a place in Shrewsbury Town’s spangled hall of fame after a hat-trick in the 4-0 shellacking of Hereford United a couple of weeks back.In the county of Much Wenlock and the Long Mynd, Chairman Roland Wycherley is as Shropshire a Lad as can be and he’ll have been delighted by a victory in one…

In the laissez-faire culture of the contemporary game, there are few butchers, bakers and candlestick-makers among those who take the field on 1st Round weekend. On the contrary, the teams that form the peak of the non-league pyramid are often as formidable an opposition as the clubs…

The past few weeks on this blog have largely been dedicated to previewing the new season. Supporters up and down the country have been waiting in anticipation for the new season to start, and the opening round of matches, plus tonight’s League Cup ties, have left everyone with much to digest (even if, in my case, I’d really rather not). Some things put football in perspective, though, and tonight’s tragic news that 31-year-old former Yeovil, Hereford and Exeter striker Adam Stansfield had lost his battle with cancer certainly does that. Stansfield spent most of his career outside the Football League,…
