Football League Stars gone American

A remarkable characteristic of the soccerine blogosphere is the healthy percentage of the better sites that are North American controlled, with Run of Play and Pitch Invasion two notables in this respect. Although distance from the action leads to an often unhealthy reliance on secondary sources (we ourselves can clutch at straws and take the moral high ground as my fellow blogger Lloyd makes the trek to Colchester tomorrow), their coverage continues to meet a high standard and nowhere more so than in their analyses of the stateside game’s showpiece platform, Major League Soccer. Now, I myself am being forced to…

TTU 2010/11: Season Preview: Championship (Part One)

Our week of 2010-11 previews starts here and, rather than sound off with our own views once again, we decided this year to canvass the opinion of fans of all the league clubs. Thankfully, we have been overwhelmed with a warm hearted response and no little wit. The Championship previews appear today in two parts, with Leagues 1 and 2 to follow later in the week. Here goes and needless to say, the opinions are those of the contributors and not necessarily The Two Unfortunates:BarnsleyHeadline of the SummerLosing top goal scorer Daniel Bogdanović to our mortal enemies from S2, Sheffield…

A rock and a hard place

It is no exaggeration to state that the news of Nigel Pearson’s appointment as the new manager of Hull City constituted the most unlikely defection since arch-Tory Quentin Davies crossed the floor to become a Labour minister in 2007. Following months of reports hinting at a raging financial crisis at the Sunshine Band Stadium, Pearson’s abandonment of a team which he guided to the League 1 title in 2008/09 and a more than respectable 5th place finish in last year’s Championship for the East Riding of Yorkshire (as my fellow Unfortunate Lloyd stated earlier today) was a genuinely surprising development. From…

Coming Down

Back in March, my fellow blogger Scarf produced a fine analysis of the clubs pushing for a place in the Championship this season, a situation which, at the time of writing is still some way from resolution. Apart from Norwich, the identity of the second automatic promotee is still anyone’s guess. Leeds had a chance to build an unassailable advantage on Saturday but toppled to a miserable defeat at Priestfield. The ease of producing a fine run when there is no pressure can swiftly turn to a wobbly nervousness when the box seat is occupied, as both Swindon and Millwall…
