The similarities between literature and the Championship are legion. This is the first in a new, weekly series of posts drawing parallels between the timeless characters of World letters and those of our cherished league. To start, our example comes from perhaps the most famous literary work of all. The title character of Hamlet is a mental dead ringer for Shane Supple, the goalkeeper who voluntarily ended his Ipswich Town prematurely earlier this campaign. True, the Irishman may not have matched the Dane in wishing to shuffle from “this mortal coil”, although some would say that pursuing a career with…

The Thursday Preview: Leicester Vs Ipswich
Blue on Blue. City versus Town. Fox against Tractor. It may just be me, but there’s something a bit prosaic about the idea of previewing Sunday’s game between Leicester and Ipswich, the clubs’ second meeting of the season following an August stalemate. Forget Saipan, Haaland and Vieira
The international break allows pause for breath and those of us who support struggling teams will for once be anticipating this weekend with some relish. Just about a quarter of the season has now gone and given the reliability of the table after 11 games in providing an indicator of the final standings come May, it’s time for us to further analyze Ipswich Town’s frankly cataclysmic season, already featured in Lloyd’s post earlier today. Such is the pull of a certain Irishman that two BBC bloggers have placed the Portman Road outfit under the microscope in recent days, with both…
Surprise, Surprise
A few weeks ago, one poster on these pages said that the only surprise of the season so far was that there hadn’t been any, but the last three games have turned that over to an extent. The three relegated teams still head the table, but a collective sticky patch has opened things up a little. Just 10 points have been garnered from a possible 27 between them in the last three games, which roughly equates to Reading’s form this season, so there’s hope for the rest of us yet. Of the trio’s two more vulnerable sides, Middlesboro’s Smogblogger has…
