Whatever you say I am, that’s what I’m not

Airing your opinions in public can be a chastening experience. In an arena as changeable as football, the potential for being proven wrong is ever present danger for the fan foolish enough to part with his two penn’orth.I wasn’t the only one to roll my eyes at the notion of signing Ipswich reserve forward Kevin Lisbie. ‘At least if he’s on loan, we can send him back’ was the prevailing thought on hearing news of the 32-year-old Jamaican international’s imminent return to South London. How wrong could I have been. One scuffed shot from becoming the latest boo-boy at the…

Quote of the Day

“What a difference a game makes… David James’ last competitive match was England’s World Cup clash against Germany - seen by millions. His next competitive (we use the word loosely) match after joining Bristol City is Millwall at home. Former Three Lions to the Lions in one swoop. Marvellous.”Saturday’s Sun (don’t ask why I was reading it - not sure myself) reacts to the news of David James’ move to Bristol City by belittling the Championship. Because of course, as we all know (and as the likes of the Sun and Sky Sports tell us), the Premier League is the…

(More) Remembrance of the season past

With the pre-season almost upon us, and a day bereft of World Cup action, our two ex-League 1 supporters took some time to reflect on the previous campaign.Stanley: On a personal note, the season started sluggishly, but ended in celebration, victory in the play-off final providing a just reward for a hard-working and ruthless Millwall team. But what of the other 23 clubs? Despite opening with a catastrophe, Norwich City finished the season as deserved Champions, while Leeds United finally made the upward move they have craved since taking up residence in the third tier. Others who left their imprint…

Onwards and upwards

The blue and white bunting will long since have been replaced by St George crosses on the lampposts of Bermondsey, but the days since Millwall’s triumph in the League One play-off final have been, for some of us, a time of reflection on the prospect of Championship football. Shuffling down Olympic Way after the 1-0 defeat of Swindon Town on 29 May, the near silence of 38,000 fans beginning the slow journey home to South London seemed to testify an uncertainty over how the club would adjust to its new circumstances. In the four years since Millwall’s last, ignominious campaign…
