The Monday Profile: Leon Britton

Sadly, the spelling of the name is different, though one is still left to ponder if Sheffield United midfielder Leon Britton is named after Baron Brittan of Spennithorne. The Tory grandee is best known for his spell as Home Secretary during the Thatcher years, a period of parsimony that would shame even the egregious George Osborne, so it’s unlikely that the diminutive south Londoner was christened in homage, even if he first saw the light of day in that borough with the lowest Council Tax of all, Wandsworth.Britton has been an essential cog of that most pleasing of Championship midfields…

24: Season Review, Part Five: QUE to SHE

Three expected challengers who never came close and one mooted set of whipping boys who did Lincolnshire proud. Topsier-turvier times would be hard to conceive for the hoops of Reading and QPR as Kevin Blackwell meddled with his line-up like a demented pharmacist and the amiable Nigel Adkins proved he was more than just a mate of the BBC’s Mark Clemmit.Queen’s Park RangersQPR were scintillating in the Fall, a televised comeback at Derby evoking memories of Seventies legends. This came on the heels of batterings of Barnsley and Reading at the Bush and a syrupy forward line looked way too…

The Championship: Winners and Losers

The end of the season is a time to reflect on the nine months just gone. As we approach the season’s finale, it is time to consider: Who has overachieved, and who has flattered to deliver? Who has surprised us and who has underwhelmed us? Here we take a look at five clubs who have sparkled this year, and five more whose once bright lights have somewhat dimmed.Defying the OddsPrior to the start of the season, many predicted that Newcastle might follow in the infamous footsteps of Leeds United and implode spectacularly. Nine months later, boss Chris Hughton can look…

The Thursday Preview: Sheffield Wednesday Vs Sheffield United

Like my Preview of a couple of weeks ago, I’m looking ahead tonight towards another high-stakes end-of-season derby. With just three games to go until we reach 46, plenty of fans are now firmly ensconced in that period of squeakiness where hearts and minds are dominated by as yet unrealized permutations and eventualities, and, other than our own team’s fixture this weekend, it’s Sunday’s Steel City Derby which probably holds the most interest for us fans. That’s because in all likelihood it (a) represents the opportunity for Wednesday to avoid joining Peterborough and Plymouth in the League One cull, and (b)…

The Thursday Preview: Doncaster Vs Sheffield United

I shouldn’t really say it, but it’s become increasingly obvious that our Division has been an average one this year. It didn’t take too long to acknowledge that the gulf between ourselves and the Premiership is considerable, Newcastle’s no nonsense poundings reminding us each of our modest stations before we really got started. Never has a football result been so predictable as last night’s regulation triumph for the Magpies over the Iron. Maybe I’m being a little disingenuous by comparing these two very different clubs, but it’s clear that a team needs only to be a smidgeon better than decent…
