What I want from my football club - Part 5: Play-off hopefuls

The Seventy Two has canvassed the opinion of several Football League writers from a variety of different clubs to ask one simple question: what do you want from your football club? Given around 300 words to play with, there were numerous responses so we will be looking at a cross-section every day this week, continuing with the thoughts of supporters of four clubs who will end the 2011/12 season with the play-offs in mind - West Ham United, Huddersfield Town, Cardiff City and Gillingham. West Ham United by Stuart Fuller Since our current owners came on board, West Ham fans…

The Colossus of Jordan Rhodes: Part 3 - Goals, More Damned Goals and Statistics

This is the final section of The Seventy Two’s three-part examination of the goalscoring phenomenon that is Huddersfield Town striker Jordan Rhodes, written by Marco Jackson. The goal at Notts County was Jordan’s 83rd for club and country; rather neatly, he has made 165 appearances. That’s practically a goal every other appearance on average, which is nothing if not impressive. It is slightly misleading, though. Only 62 of those appearances lasted 90 minutes. It works out that Jordan has played 11,196 minutes (as of January 2nd) since his debut (including games for Ipswich, Oxford United, Rochdale, Brentford, Huddersfield Town, Scotland…

The Colossus of Jordan Rhodes: Part 2 - Huddersfield Town’s gain

Part Two of our three-part look at Huddersfield Town’s goalscoring gem is written by Marco Jackson. Jordan Rhodes is a phenomenon; there’s no other way to describe him. His goal in Huddersfield’s 2-2 draw at Notts County was his 22nd goal for the team this season, in 22 appearances. This follows on from scoring 22 last season, and 23 the season before that. He knows where the goal is and is finding it more and more as he gets older. He is 21 years old. That’s not all Jordan Rhodes is, though. Here’s a little of what we know of…

Championship play-off preview: Past lessons

In the third and final of Marco Jackson’s statistical play-off previews, the second tier comes under the microscope. It never used to be like this, but in the last few years, the amount of importance put on that one game in late May, and the monetary value placed on people kicking a ball around, is getting greater and greater and greater. There’s been some pretty memorable games, too - last year’s Blackpool against Cardiff was a classic of the genre, and I was living in Norwich during City’s playoff loss in 2002, which probably hardened my fondness for the Canaries….

League One play-off preview: Past lessons

With the play-offs nearly upon us, Huddersfield Town fan Marco Jackson takes a detailed look at the history of the third tier showdown. Can we read anything into what has gone before? I’d been trying to avoid looking at the play-offs this season, hoping that Huddersfield would be in second, but if I’d dared to look down, I’d want to arm myself with the best stats I can for the situation, so that’s what I hope to impart here. I come into this, as with all statistics I work with, with an open mind – questions that I’d like to…
