The Monday Profile: Bradley Wright-Phillips

“He’s better than Shaun, he’s better than Sha-au-un, Bradley Wright-Phillips, he’s better than Shaun”. Or so Plymouth fans became accustomed to singing in the few months leading to the Londoner’s recent move homewards to League One rivals Charlton. But, as an Argyle fan, I have a confession to make. Tongue-in-cheek as that chant was meant to be, I always found myself disagreeing with a petulant shake of the head. “Well no, he clearly isn’t”, I muttered to the Old Man on several occasions. BWP really didn’t float my boat and I was glad to see the back of him.Signed by…

Gleaning Windows: 10 Key January Signings

With a fortnight having passed since the keys turned in the lock of the transfer kitty vaults, I thought I would attempt to identify which ten of the myriad deals done may benefit purchasers most in the short term. The list below is a subjective one, peppered with both the obvious and the unheralded, and no doubt destined to be debunked four months from now. I’ve attempted to ignore the evidence of February’s first two weeks, compelling though it is in cases, and restricted my selections to permanent deals…so here goes…and with respect to Mark Wright, James Chester, Ian Ashbee…

New dawn at the Valley?

Taking one’s time over a post can have its downsides. Having begun piecing together an assessment of Charlton Athletic’s situation following the announcement on 31 December that a long-awaited takeover had finally been completed, I didn’t expect quite yet to have to rip up (figuratively, of course) and start again. A feeling no doubt shared by most who filed into the Valley last Monday night. The emphasis of new chairman Michael Slater in his maiden press interview on Friday was firmly on stability. To questions regarding manager Phil Parkinson’s position, he responded: “It’s certainly not our intention to make any change….

Catcalls from Charlton’s Covered End Choir

For our latest guest contribution, we are pleased to present a match report from Yasser11, a keen supporter of the footballing blogosphere, but noteworthy in particular for his insatiable appetite for watching football in the flesh. Following trips to Stamford Bridge and Bedfont F. C.’s ground at The Orchard last week, Yasser made his way to The Valley last night. Here are his impressions:There was no mist rolling in from the Thames to cover up Charlton’s all too apparent failings on the night, as their winless run in the league continued for a fifth game running. It was difficult to…

The Thursday Preview: Rochdale Vs Charlton

Carbrini Sportswear is to athletic kit what Dixy Fried Chicken is to fast food: available only in the discount stores of inner city, working class suburbs like Harpurhey or Woolwich, conjuring up images of Sunday morning high roads buffeted by gales and greasy cartons. That the firm has manufactured uniforms and sponsored a bevy of lower league clubs is therefore telling; but it’s about all that links the adversaries in Saturday’s Spotland clash between Rochdale and Charlton. For this is one of those games Peter Snow would have loved plotting with the swingometer. As Matt Holland was firing them past Chelsea…
