Cardiff City, Age Discrimination and Common Sense

Last week, Cardiff City placed their head of recruitment, Iain Moody, the man presumably responsible for the signing of Gary Medel, Andreas Cornelius and Steven Caulker, on gardening leave and replaced him with Alisher Apsalyamov. The BBC hailed this news with the headline, ‘Cardiff replace head of recruitment with 23-year-old Kazakh.’ So far, so accurate although as a sentence riven with hidden opinion, it’s as fine an example as you will see. Putting out Apsalyamov’s nationality is the first invitation to ridicule – that’s Borat’s gaff after all. Then there is the man’s age – by purely stating the facts,…

The Death of the 92 Club

I was surprised to learn that the fabled 92 Club – the movement that recognises those hardy souls who have attended a match at all the Football League grounds - dates back only to the late seventies – ironically perhaps in that the accession of Wimbledon and Wigan Athletic to the competition will have immediately thrown things into confusion. The original proposal was for this feat to be recognised by the award of a tie – with League administrator Alan Hardaker backing the plan as well as a range of the red tops. Despite the new arrivals, it was a…

A Football League SWOT Analysis: The Weaknesses

Crisis

Of course by its very definition the Football League is weak – comparatively. While it’s true that West Ham and Southampton skilfully negotiated the step up to the Premier League this past year, both enjoyed wage structures and transfer budgets way beyond the scope of second tier clubs. Yesterday’s opening post on this four day SWOT analysis salvo perhaps painted too rosy a picture of the League’s attributes. Today’s comes up with a decidedly different portrait. It’s clear that many of the competition’s strengths have their exact obverse on the weaknesses front and indeed, many of these issues are perilously close to the threats…

Once More Unto the Breach: The Football League Season Draws to a Conclusion

Tonight, Watford travel to Leicester City at the onset of a nail biting weekend of Football League fixtures. With a great many issues still hanging in the balance, our two founding bloggers, Lloyd and Lanterne Rouge convened to discuss the prospects: … Lanterne Rouge: As a Plymouth fan, you’ve mentioned to me that you are still worried about the drop - it’s quite possible mathematically but will take a chain reaction of perhaps sub-nuclear proportions for Argyle to go down to the Football League. Having analysed the various relegation candidates for this blog a few weeks ago, who do you…

Relegation From the Football League is Not the End of the World

Beachy Head

This year’s League Two relegation battle is quite remarkable. Not just for the closeness of the fight, but for the teams involved. All bar one have recently spent time in the Conference and all bar one have gained promotion to the League since two-up two-down was introduced from non-league’s top tier. Does this mean the gap between the two divisions is decreasing? Or getting further apart? Relegation battles in League Two have followed a similar pattern in previous seasons. There would inevitably be one financial basket case of a club, plus a few of the smaller league teams and others who’d…
