The Thursday Preview: Barnet Vs Chesterfield

What kind of a man is Martin Allen? My first memory of him was as a QPR player, lunging in horrendously on Alan Hansen in a Milk Cup Semi Final at Anfield: “I lifted him about six feet in the air on the edge of their 18 yard box in front of a packed end of R’s fans! Needless to say, I got another booking!”Allen was hewn from different stone than his calmer cousins, Paul, Bradley and Clive, and confrontation has been a recurring theme throughout his time in English football. A man who proudly boasts of signing Sam Sodje after seeing…

The Thursday Preview: Chesterfield Vs Aldershot

Between ourselves and fellow Football League websites The Seventy Two and Soccer AM/MW, coverage of Chesterfield Football Club’s 2010-11 has been scant thus far - surprising given the club’s arrival in a new home and subsequent ascent to a comfortable first place in League Two. With the Derbyshire men a full eleven points clear of fourth placed Bury, it was high time we put this oversight right.John Sheridan was one of the most under rated playmakers of his day - veritably hero worshipped at Leeds, he was a cornerstone of Sheffield Wednesday’s last great side, scooping a Cup Final winner and gracing…

The Thursday Preview: Stevenage Vs Chesterfield

Asked in August to preview Chesterfield’s forthcoming League 2 campaign, I highlighted the lack of support for Jack Lester during last season as an area of concern for manager John Sheridan. That particular problem seems to have been rectified: the polish hasn’t yet worn off the Spireites’ new abode and it has already staged a 4-3 victory over Shrewsbury and a 5-5 draw with a resurgent Crewe. Unsurprisingly, the rising tide of goals has swelled the numbers clicking through the turnstiles, and an optimism absent in recent years has taken hold. On the pitch, Lester’s shoulders have been spared the…

The Hell that is supporting Middlesbrough

I had a number of appropriate topics to cover in my first submission for these here pages, far more suitable than what I am about to bring forth. As it is, there’s really only one thing on my mind, which is the utter hell that comes with being a supporter of Middlesbrough Football Club. I’ll therefore ask you to indulge me as I embark on something of a rant for several hundred words. If you like, it’s one of those ‘get it off your chest’ moments. I’ll get over it, or maybe I won’t. The trouble with being a Boro…

The Monday Profile: Scott Griffiths

One of the most notable pieces of business on transfer deadline day was the extension of left back Scott Griffiths’ loan from Peterborough to Chesterfield for a further two months. A solid performer, Griffiths first appeared on these pages over a year ago, when impressing my fellow blogger Lanterne Rouge whilst playing for Dagenham. Soon after, he moved to Peterborough United, where an initial loan move was made permanent in January 2010. Unfortunately, Griffiths has since fallen victim to the revolving door that has been the Posh manager’s office over the past 18 months and was told earlier this season…
