Once upon a time, the PFA Awards were the undisputed measure of a season’s most valuable players. Voted for by the Professionals themselves, the response to their announcement was one of awed hush and consent – how could mere onlookers presume to know better than those involved in the rough and tumble of the actual sport? But the saccharin, sentimental and simply silly award of the 2009 Players’ Player award to Ryan Giggs changed all that. In one fell swoop, footballers were shown to be as susceptible to a bit of old fashioned press lobbying as the rest of us….

Rotherham United: No Longer the Same Club?
Yesterday, Steve Evans took over as manager at Rotherham United. Lifelong Millers’ fan David Rawson here provides his reaction. It’s probably three-quarters of a mile, if that. It just feels further. The red paint on the wooden gates at the back of Millmoor’s Tivoli End has faded a little now. In places, it’s flaked off, exposing grey undercoat and the wood beneath. The same goes for the narrow doors, behind which the old turnstiles stand silent. The Thursday Preview: Swindon Vs Rotherham
I don’t wish to gloat, I really don’t, but the tomfoolery witnessed at the close of Tuesday night’s game between Swindon and Southampton was just, well, all too predictable. Back at the beginning of August, I contributed towards a League 2 prediction piece for Two Footed Tackle, and questioned why bookmakers were backing the Robins to do well. A few weeks later and the Wiltshiremen have lost four league games on the bounce and have had to endure further humiliation off the field. It all makes for fascinating viewing as Sky head westwards this Saturday afternoon. No doubt they’ll pan…
Moore’s the pity
On a weekend of whopping away wins in the Football League, the ordinarily noteable scorelines posted by Yeovil, Stevenage and Wycombe were eclipsed by Rotherham romping to a 6-0 victory over Lincoln at Sincil Bank - a result all the more remarkable for the fact that it was achieved without a manager and their leading scorer, and having been on the end of a heavy drubbing themselves in their previous match. Talk about bouncebackability. I think that probably qualifies as the “response” that caretaker Andy Liddell was hoping for…Spare a thought for Liddell’s predecessor Ronnie Moore. Having parted company with…
