Over recent months, we have called upon regular followers of non-league football in order to guess at which players might stand a chance of forging a career in the Football League, should they wish to take the opportunity. First up was Michael Hudson; the proprietor of The Accidental Groundhopper website running the rule over the Northern League. Then, Barry from The Cold End highlighted the Isthmian League’s potentialities. Now, regular TTU staffer Scarf analyzes those players operating in the most likely breeding ground of all, while sharing his forthright views following half a season’s Conference watching. Mad Hatters?
Either Stockport’s new owners have bottomless pockets and Bury’s Ryan Lowe is so good that they’d consider shattering the world transfer record in a bid to haul themselves back into the Football League, or the Daily Star need to employ more competent and attentive proofreaders. My money’s probably on the latter.(Apologies for the pedantry, but given that most of us work in publishing I’m afraid you just have to expect it…)
TTU Awards 2010/2011: Crimes against Football
Possibly the closest category to call, this split our voters - divided by micro and macro concerns. At the latter level, the usual suspects are there: the primary interviewee on Lord Sugar Tackles Football, some oval ball proponents from the South Manchester borders and all those associated with the downfall of a Green Army from Devonshire. Two newcomers will be greeted with less than open arms - Crawley Town’s seeming intention to buy their way out of the lower leagues (Charlie Lee, Chris Whelpdale and Wes Thomas have already signed for perhaps the shadiest gaffer in football) and those classy publishers from…

There’s a whole other article that could be be written on the dynamic between Stockport County and Sale Sharks, but for the purposes of this award we’ll focus on the pitch at Edgeley Park. Plenty of football clubs share grounds with those amateur gents of the oval ball, Reading and Wycombe to name but two, and at points those playing surfaces may suffer from the sheer amount of game time demanded of them. But up in Greater Manchester, where the Hatters are mere tenants to the holding company which owns Sale Sharks, Cheshire Sports, it’s a different story. For several years now, Stockport supporters have had to spend hard earned money to watch…
Great Football League Teams 18: Stockport County 1996-7
Stockport County are today in a dark place; facing relegation from the Football League for the first time in over a century and with the whole future of the club potentially in doubt. Here, guest poster Mozzer takes some time off his usual hobby of berating linesmen and opposition supporters (paritcularly if they might once have been Thatcherite sympathisers) alike to recall happier times. For many County fans the 1996/7 season represents the highest point in their football-watching lives. It wasn’t the highest ever league position – that was achieved the following season with an eighth place finish in the…
