The Death of the 92 Club

I was surprised to learn that the fabled 92 Club – the movement that recognises those hardy souls who have attended a match at all the Football League grounds - dates back only to the late seventies – ironically perhaps in that the accession of Wimbledon and Wigan Athletic to the competition will have immediately thrown things into confusion. The original proposal was for this feat to be recognised by the award of a tie – with League administrator Alan Hardaker backing the plan as well as a range of the red tops. Despite the new arrivals, it was a…

TTU Go Predicting: The Sack Race

The dismissal of Lee Clark from his last job inspired our then second most read post of all time and that he clings on for grim life at Birmingham City might seem incredible. To boot, he’s been allowed to completely overhaul the squad in a ferocious frenzy of downsizing. But Birmingham International Holdings remain in charge of the second city club for the moment, with acting chairman Peter Pannu benefitting strongly from emoluments of various hues, providing therefore an illustration of the thinking behind the continuation of Clark’s sinecure. A takeover is sorely needed at St Andrew’s and for now, replacing…

TTU Go Predicting: a Club-by-Club League 2 Preview

We’re baaack! Kicking off this year’s look ahead to the new season, we focus today on the clubs who’ll be competing in League 2 this year and – because everyone likes a prediction – pass judgement on where they might finish. Then, tomorrow and Wednesday, we put the spotlight on League 1 and the Championship respectively before spending the rest of the time leading up to August 3 offering forth some predictions for the campaign which in some way mirror our annual end of season awards posts. Accrington Stanley James Beattie’s never really come across as management material and it…

TTU Awards 2012-13: Flop of the Season

It’s been a fine season for flops across the divisions. Unfair though it may be, many a neutral has taken pleasure at the continued turmoil at Blackburn Rovers over the past 12 months and one of our regulars particularly cited Danny Murphy’s role in their ongoing decline. Having arrived with great expectations, the Rovers captain not only failed to lead the Lancastrians back to the Premier League but also found himself stripped of the armband under Michael Appleton. £30,000 a week well invested, Venky’s. Elsewhere, Owen Coyle was given the nod, as were Middlesbrough, Tranmere and Dagenham, all three clubs…

Relegation From the Football League is Not the End of the World

Beachy Head

This year’s League Two relegation battle is quite remarkable. Not just for the closeness of the fight, but for the teams involved. All bar one have recently spent time in the Conference and all bar one have gained promotion to the League since two-up two-down was introduced from non-league’s top tier. Does this mean the gap between the two divisions is decreasing? Or getting further apart? Relegation battles in League Two have followed a similar pattern in previous seasons. There would inevitably be one financial basket case of a club, plus a few of the smaller league teams and others who’d…
