Kicking the ball out of play: a defence

The reaction of Nottingham Forest fans to last weekend’s frankly apocalyptic defeat at the hands of Derby County has for the most part been extraordinarily fair minded. The game possessed controversy of course - but the absence of those twin firebrands Savage and Davies calmed the mood and the City Ground faithful have turned inward in an attempt to explain the defeat.Despite a spirited midweek performance against Newcastle United, Steve McLaren is walking on eggshells. The spirit seems to be sapping from the Tricky Trees and there is the kind of open advocation of regime change that would make even Steve Kean…

Cautious Optimism at Home Park

Has a corner finally been turned at Home Park? The days, weeks and months of agony suffered by Pilgrims supporters, not to mention the club’s staff and players, have been assiduously logged and documented across print and digital media but, until now, the news has nearly always set heads a-banging.A few weeks ago, we were patronised as champagne corks popped upon the announcement that the club had been ‘saved’. An oxymoron if ever there was one; prospective buyers BIL having presided over a bid that had, to put it politely, taken the fucking piss at every possible juncture. But today a…

Black Pudding Derby delight for ‘Dale

We’ve all been there: the hubris and cockiness borne of conviction and enthusiasm coming back to bite us firmly in the backside. And so it was on Saturday for the Bury fans - rejoicing at being back in League 1 and fortified by pre-match pints in the metal box of a social club adjacent to Gigg Lane (£1 in for non-members; distinct odour of hot dogs, cooking lager and sweat) - who lustily serenaded their Rochdale counterparts with a chant of “You’re the shit of Lancashire”. Just eighteen minutes in, and with the shellshocked home side already three goals down,…

Book Review: Glory, Goals and Greed

Glory, Goals & Greed: Twenty Years of the Premier LeagueBy Joe LovejoyPublished by Mainstream, August 2011£11.99 (Paperback)ISBN: 978-1845-96768-0Our latest book review comes by way of Phil Ascough, a regular contributor to TTU and author of Kissing the Badge, reviewed in these pages last month. In pitching my ideas for Kissing The Badge to Bloomsbury, other options also made the short list. My favourite, a club-by-club, season-by-season review of the Premier League with additional sections on the best players, bosses, matches and so on was shelved. It would have taken too long, cost too much to put together and carried too high a price…

Bank Holidaying in Hungary

Excuse the imaginative-less title, but I thought that I’d direct peoples’ attention to a new piece that I devoted portions of my Bank Holiday weekend to which has now gone up on the excellent Hungarian Football website. It’s a recent history of Plymouth Argyle as told through the experiences of their three former Magyars, Ákos Buzsáky, Péter Halmosi and Krisztián Timár. At less than 2000 words, I’d hope that it would be of interest more widely to non-Argyle supporters, particularly those of QPR and Hull where Buzsáky and Halmosi have respectively enjoyed mixed fortunes. For anyone who also came across…
