TTU Go Predicting: a Club-by-Club League 2 Preview

We’re baaack! Kicking off this year’s look ahead to the new season, we focus today on the clubs who’ll be competing in League 2 this year and – because everyone likes a prediction – pass judgement on where they might finish. Then, tomorrow and Wednesday, we put the spotlight on League 1 and the Championship respectively before spending the rest of the time leading up to August 3 offering forth some predictions for the campaign which in some way mirror our annual end of season awards posts. Accrington Stanley James Beattie’s never really come across as management material and it…

TTU Awards 2012-13: Manager of the Season

Of all the categories this year, our opinion formers were most divided on this. Sure, the collection of silverware is all important but it’s as much about the raw materials and how far they are stretched. Hence, a number of bosses deserve credit for exceeding expectations - those gentlemen who chose to forget this when assessing Nigel Adkins and last year’s winner Brian McDermott would do well to take note. Tiers 2-4 have provided a no more encouraging environment for those playing the long game but with Barnsley written off before the start of every season as relegation fodder, and this…

Life Without Tony Pulis

Boskamp

After a somewhat disappointing 1-0 defeat at Carrow Road on Saturday, Stoke City’s slightly listless start to 2012-13 has continued with many neutral observers wondering whether the zenith of what the club can achieve - symbolised by last year’s creditable foray into European competition - is now behind them. Still, the mood at the Britannia today bears little relation to an occasion in the past when a certain Welshman was absent. Here’s Rob Doolan of the wondrous blog, The 90s Football Party: This week, Tony Pulis celebrated the 10th anniversary of his first game in charge of Stoke City. Few…

TTU Awards 2011-12: Manager of the Season

For our penultimate award it’s difficult, as ever, to overlook those managers who have steered their team to either a championship or promotion winning season. Indeed, despite his irritating histrionics and basic unpleasantness, Paolo di Canio took a previously dismal Swindon back up to League 1 at the first time of asking against a backdrop of tragic personal circumstances and, should he stick it out in Wiltshire, his side should be competitive in 2012-13. Otherwise, much credit goes to Chris Powell and Nigel Adkins both; the former for getting it spot on and rejuvenating a team close to his heart;…

The PFA Awards: Stuff and Nonsense?

Once upon a time, the PFA Awards were the undisputed measure of a season’s most valuable players. Voted for by the Professionals themselves, the response to their announcement was one of awed hush and consent – how could mere onlookers presume to know better than those involved in the rough and tumble of the actual sport? But the saccharin, sentimental and simply silly award of the 2009 Players’ Player award to Ryan Giggs changed all that. In one fell swoop, footballers were shown to be as susceptible to a bit of old fashioned press lobbying as the rest of us….
