Ten Reasons to Love the Football League

So Football is officially dead then – beside images of sideburns, NHS celebrations, Kenneth Branagh in a top hat, a Somali-born hero, David Rudisha, the lightning bolt and the tranquil surrounds of ‘Eton Dorney’, the game has lost its sheen – embattled as it was when Freddie Flintoff inspired an Embrace song in 2005 and Jonny drop kicked that ball two years before. Well maybe – but we still feel there are reasons to celebrate the return of the round ball – and the Football League in particular. Hence, Lanterne Rouge (LR), Lloyd (LL) and John McGee (JM) have been…

TTU Awards 2010/2011: Best Away Trip

What makes a good day out? Three points would do nicely for a start, even in Dagenham, but other variables might range from a particularly memorable chant to the discovery of cracking pub in the shadow of the ground (more to come on that later in the summer on this site…). This year, the award goes to a trip that happened to provide positive results in two of those criteria for this very writer; a September evening in Swindon yielding a satisfying pre-match session in the delightfully named Glue Pot, as well as a barnstorming 3-2 win under the floodlights in which Bradley Wright-Phillips headed an injury time winner….

The Thursday Preview: Morecambe Vs Southend

As man-versus-beast clashes go, it hardly sounds like the most titanic or epic - certainly not worth a mention on Human Planet. But nevertheless this Saturday’s encounter between the Shrimpers and the Shrimps is shaping up to be quite tasty.Morecambe are no doubt so sick of hearing about the exploits of them down the road, currently basking in the bright lights of the Premier League and enduring the patronising pats of pundits, that they’re hoping Ian Holloway goes the way of Coronation Street’s Alan Bradley. But they too find themselves in new and pleasantly unfamiliar surroundings. Christie Park has been…

Gleaning Windows: 10 Key January Signings

With a fortnight having passed since the keys turned in the lock of the transfer kitty vaults, I thought I would attempt to identify which ten of the myriad deals done may benefit purchasers most in the short term. The list below is a subjective one, peppered with both the obvious and the unheralded, and no doubt destined to be debunked four months from now. I’ve attempted to ignore the evidence of February’s first two weeks, compelling though it is in cases, and restricted my selections to permanent deals…so here goes…and with respect to Mark Wright, James Chester, Ian Ashbee…

The Monday Profile: Adam Rundle

The 26th of May 2008 is a day I remember precious little of. A shame, because the day marks the first - and perhaps only - time that I saw my beloved Stockport County win at Wembley, beating Rochdale 3-2 in the League 2 Playoff Final. As so often with these momentous occasions, however, it is all something of a blur, two years on. Well, almost all of a blur, anway. The one distinct memory I do have is not of County captain Gareth Owen lifting the trophy, or even of any of our goals, but of Rochdale’s left winger…
