Disarray at the Sixfields Crossroads

Firstly, we’d like to apologise to the author of this piece, Danny Brothers, for furthering his torment on Saturday. Not only did he have to sit through a ponging performance from Northampton, he had to write about it afterwards following an opportunistic request prior to the game from yours truly. Fair play for following up with this, Danny. We owe you one… I was asked, on Saturday, by my friends at The Two Unfortunates, if I could write a report on the current state of Northampton Town and the differences between the Gary Johnson era and the start of a…

Book Review: Where’s your Caravan?

Where’s your Caravan? By Chris Hargreaves, Published by The Friday Project, August 2011, £8.99, ISBN: 9780007364145 What next for a lower league footballer upon retirement? A simple enough premise, but too few biographies have tackled the theme with any distinction, so Chris Hargreaves’ recent release, which engages throughout with the realities and emotions of signing off from one’s playing days, is a welcome addition. An unravelling set of new challenges, the ennui and the odd bout of despair rub shoulders with feelings of regret and nostalgia here, and Hargreaves does well to convey all of this with relative precision. As one might expect…

Conversations with Danny Brothers (Northampton Town)

Our latest conversation is with Danny Brothers, author of a number of posts for us including a look back at Northampton Town’s 1996-7 play-off winning side. Here, Danny gives us his views on Gary Johnson, Adebayo Akinfenwa, the challenge of the oval ball game and the club’s current…

The Monday Profile: Ian Henderson

Being dubbed a young player with promise is sometimes the cruellest thing that can happen to a footballer. As contemporaries in the Norwich City youth set-up a decade ago, Ian Henderson and Ryan Jarvis made their first team debuts within six months of each other. In November 2002, Henderson scored as a substitute in his second Canaries appearance. Jarvis, the more precocious of the pair, was the star striker of England’s U17 side when he became City’s then youngest ever first team player in April 2003. A year later, although they were still only on the fringes of the first…
