With a fortnight having passed since the keys turned in the lock of the transfer kitty vaults, I thought I would attempt to identify which ten of the myriad deals done may benefit purchasers most in the short term. The list below is a subjective one, peppered with both the obvious and the unheralded, and no doubt destined to be debunked four months from now. I’ve attempted to ignore the evidence of February’s first two weeks, compelling though it is in cases, and restricted my selections to permanent deals…so here goes…and with respect to Mark Wright, James Chester, Ian Ashbee…

The Monday Profile: Steve Morison
Most of us who braved the icy pavements of South Bermondsey on Saturday evening were rewarded with a performance that belied Millwall’s recent barren spell. And, as less hardy folk watching from centrally-heated living rooms will have noted, this was in no little part due to the persistence of Sky Sports’ man-of-the-match Steve Morison.Interviewed on the turf after the 3-0 demolition of Scunthorpe, Morison admitted a desire to play top-flight football, and he has applied himself during the past 18 months like a man with clear ambition. The Monday Profile: Kazenga LuaLua
Loans are all about exposure - whether it be an ageing or currently overlooked professional reminding other clubs of his existence and attributes or a talented but raw youngster handed the opportunity to gain valuable competitive experience. It’s said that the table never lies and, prompted by the circumspection of the yawning international break, that 10/11 game mark can be prophetic indeed. Portsmouth have shown enough vim in recent weeks, plus enough converted cash, to hint that their current position is a false one, and Sven should steer the Good Ship Leicester to safety, no matter how rockingly hilarious it would be should be fail to do so; but, across the divisions, there are clubs whose fortunes seem already engulfed in quicksand.Take Bristol City, still not recovered from a terror show of a first week - defeat…

He has brought continuality and stability to the Silkmen, who continue to be hard to beat. Having managed to keep leading players Emile Sinclair, Ricky Sappleton and John Rooney, Simpson has added to his side with established League 2 players Richard Butcher and the classy Matt Hamshaw, amongst others. This should mean they should avoid any last-day drama this time around.Ins/OutsINRichard Butcher (Lincoln)Tyrone Barnett (Hednesford) Lewis Chalmers (Aldershot)…
